Canes Take One at CVCC in Hard-Fought Weekend Series
The Louisburg College baseball team traveled to face division-leading Catawba Valley Community College over the weekend, splitting the final two games after a back-and-forth opener as the Red Hawks took the series two games to one.
Game 1 – Catawba Valley 11, Louisburg 9
The series opener turned into an offensive battle, with Louisburg rallying multiple times but ultimately falling just short.
After surrendering six runs in the first inning, the Hurricanes chipped away behind big swings from Connor Wright and Jace Dunn, who both homered. Wright finished with three hits, four runs scored, and two RBI, while Clifton Olmedo drove in four runs, including a key two-run double to tie the game in the sixth.
Louisburg erased an 8–2 deficit to tie the game at 8–8 and later 9–9, but Catawba Valley answered with a two-run eighth inning to secure the win.
On the mound, Simon Martone provided strong relief, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run, helping keep Louisburg in striking distance.
Game 2 – Louisburg 8, Catawba Valley 1
The Hurricanes responded in a big way in game two, using timely hitting and a dominant pitching performance to even the series.
After falling behind early, Louisburg scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and never looked back.
Payten Shipman led the way with two RBI, while Connor Wright added two RBI, and Hayden Fones and Clifton Olmedo each connected for home runs to extend the lead late.
On the mound, Cade Currin delivered a strong start, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one run, while Camden Wilson closed the door with 2.1 scoreless innings to secure the win.
Game 3 – Catawba Valley 6, Louisburg 1
In the series finale, Louisburg struck first but couldn't generate enough offense as Catawba Valley pulled away.
Brady Paul opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, but that would be the Hurricanes' only run of the game.
Catawba Valley capitalized on walks and defensive miscues in the middle innings to build its lead. Louisburg was held to six hits, with Connor Wright collecting two and Clifton Olmedo and Reese File adding base hits.
Anthony Dorner got the start and struck out four, while the bullpen combined to limit further damage, but the Hurricanes were unable to mount a comeback.
