Hurricanes surge into Post Season play and National Championship

The Hurricanes Esports teams ended the spring season of their first year back of competitive play on a high note. After a good showing in post season play in the fall, the Canes continued that success in the spring.

Brandon Perry, a new addition to the esports roster and also All-American corner back for the football team, tested his prowess in Madden 24. Perry finished the regular season undefeated 6-0 in Region East 2. In post season play, he made it to the semi-finals of the National Championship. Unfortunately losing to the National Champ from Harrisburg Area Community College in the semi-finals, Brandon was able to secure the 3rd place victory over Marshalltown Community College.

Our Fortnite No-Build Team 2 of Seth Apollos and Kareem Clarke had an eventful first night of tournament play on Monday April 15th. Team 2 started their first match at 6:00pm EST defeating Jackson College 3-1 to move past the first round. In round 2 they faced Southwestern Illinois College in a close match that didn't get started until 8:45 EST, ultimately winning 3-2 to take them to round 3. Round 3's match started at 10:30 EST and was another tough battle against Monroe Community College. The Canes secured their spot in the quarterfinals the following week with a 3-1 win over Monroe that ended around 1:00am EST. Team 2 would succumb to Marshalltown Community College on the 22nd losing 3-0. This team finished 4th in the Nation in the fall and top 8 in the spring, setting a high standard for those who follow.

Four of our men's soccer players decided to test their skills on the virtual soccer pitch in this years edition of EA FC 24. Rafael Cruz, Gael Villegas, Florencio Perez, and Alex Perez. All had a good regular season competing against tough opponents around the US, but three were able to make it into post season play, Rafael Cruz, Florencio Perez, and Gael Villegas. Rafa made it past the 1st round by defeating East Georgia State College 3-0. Both Rafa and Gael had wins in the quarterfinals with Rafa beating teammate Flo and Gael taking the win over Lackawanna College 3-1 on April 15th. With Rafa and Gael's wins in the quarterfinals and being on the same side of the bracket, a epic face off between each other was set to take place on April 22nd. It was a close back and forth match, tied 2 matches a piece going into the final match, Gael was able secure his spot in the National Championship finals. Rafa would face Lackawanna College in the 3rd place match winning 3-1, while Gael would unfortunately fall to Monroe Community College 3-1.

All together the Hurricanes Esports teams finished 3rd in Madden 24, 4th and top 8 in Fortnite, and 2nd/3rd for EA FC in the nation. "I couldn't be more pleased with how our first season back competing has turned out. Finishing top 4 in the nation in 3 different game titles says a lot about how competitive our student/athletes are and how much time and commitment they have for this program. We are definitely taking steps in the right direction to get this program to where I know it can be. That is due large and part to the members of this Esports program. The type of character they have both on the controllers and in the classroom", stated Coach Statum. " I'm excited for what the future holds".

Be sure to support your Hurricanes this fall '24 season as they look to build on this years accomplishments.
