Louisburg College Rocket League team Inaugural Season and Postseason Recap

The Louisburg College Rocket League team delivered an impressive showing in its inaugural competitive season, showcasing consistent improvement, standout mechanical skill, and an ability to battle through pressure moments as the season progressed. Under the guidance of Head Esports Coach Michael Statum, the Hurricanes established themselves as a disciplined, high-energy squad built on teamwork and grit.

Team Roster

The Hurricanes’ Rocket League roster featured a blend of elite competitive experience, athletic versatility, and program leadership:

  • Andre Williams — Team lead and Grand Champion–ranked Rocket League standout, known for anchoring the team’s rotations and providing high-level mechanical play.

  • Jerry Coomer — A dual-sport competitor and offensive lineman on the Louisburg football team, bringing physical discipline, communication strength, and reliability to the pitch.

  • Don Williams — A cornerstone of Louisburg Esports, competing across Tekken 8, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Rocket League, whose adaptability and veteran presence elevated the team throughout the season.

Together, this trio formed a cohesive unit that embraced coaching, overcame obstacles, and pushed the program forward in its first year.

Regular Season Performance

The Hurricanes faced one of the toughest schedules in the NJCAAE, taking on many of the top-ranked programs in the nation right out of the gate. Despite the challenge, Louisburg remained competitive in nearly every matchup.

They battled the #1 undefeated Heartland CC, a powerhouse that finished 23–0, and followed with narrow 3–2 losses to #2 Shelton State CC, #3 Wichita State, and #4 Southwestern CC, proving that the inaugural roster could stand toe-to-toe with elite competition.

Throughout the regular season, Louisburg showcased strong rotations, reliable defense, and continual improvement. Their ability to adapt mid-series—whether through kickoff adjustments, improved spacing, or controlled possession—allowed them to grow stronger each week.

By the end of the season, the Hurricanes earned a #15 ranking out of 44 teams, a remarkable achievement for a first-year program.

Postseason Run

Entering the NJCAAE postseason, the Hurricanes continued to elevate their play. Louisburg qualified as the 9th seed for the tournament following decisive wins over Iowa Central CC and Western Wyoming CC. This set up a matchup against 8th-seeded Northeastern Junior College out of Colorado.

The Hurricanes dropped the opening game 4–2, but a last-second goal provided a critical momentum shift and settled the nerves. Game two became a back-and-forth battle, with Louisburg narrowly falling 5–4 in a tightly contested match.

Facing elimination in the best-of-five series, the Canes fought with everything they had. The final game opened with high intensity, tied 2–2 within the first minute. The next four minutes were packed with tension, both teams refusing to give an inch. With 37 seconds left, Northeastern broke the stalemate to make it 3–2. Hearts sank as the Canes pushed desperately for the equalizer, but another late goal in the closing seconds sealed the match at 4–2, ending Louisburg’s postseason run.

Despite the loss, their performance showcased their growth, resilience, and ability to compete at a national level.

The inaugural 2025 Rocket League season stands as a milestone for Louisburg College Esports. With a solid playoff finish, a top-15 ranking, and continued program growth under Coach Statum, the Hurricanes set a strong foundation for the seasons ahead.
