Balanced Effort Leads Hurricanes to Two Weekend Wins
LOUISBURG, N.C. — The Louisburg College Women's Basketball team turned in an impressive weekend on their home floor, going 2-0 in the Fourth Annual 401 Classic at Roger Taylor Arena. Under the direction of Head Coach Dennis Gaskins, the Hurricanes showcased balanced scoring, unselfish play, and relentless energy on both ends of the floor.
Louisburg opened the event with a 72-60 win over Howard Community College on Saturday. After trailing through three quarters, the Hurricanes erupted for 34 points in the fourth, surging past Howard behind a dominant finish from sophomore forward Nyla Powell, who recorded 14 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Taliya Rowe provided a huge spark off the bench with 14 points, while Khouri White and Ziahmiya Adams each added 11. Shalawn Yates filled the stat sheet with nine points, four assists, and three steals as Louisburg pulled away late to secure its second win of the young season.
On Sunday, the Hurricanes carried that momentum into a 75-52 victory over Florida State College at Jacksonville. Louisburg controlled the pace from the second quarter on, shooting 50% from the field and converting 85% at the free-throw line. Adams led the way with 17 points, while White followed closely with 15 points and three steals. Powell continued her strong weekend with another double-double — 10 points and 13 rebounds — and Yates chipped in nine points and three assists.
The two wins lift Louisburg to 3-1 overall, marking a strong early-season statement for a team showing depth and chemistry across the roster.
Up next, the Hurricanes will remain at home to host USC Salkehatchie on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1:00 p.m. inside Roger Taylor Arena.
