Rowe, Powell Lead Hurricanes Past Catawba Valley at Home
LOUISBURG, N.C. — The Louisburg College Women's Basketball team turned a tight opening quarter into another convincing home victory Wednesday night, defeating Catawba Valley Community College 78–50 inside Roger Taylor Arena to remain undefeated on their home floor.
After a competitive first 10 minutes that saw Louisburg hold a slim 13–12 edge, the Hurricanes found their rhythm in the second quarter. Louisburg erupted for 25 points in the period, using defensive pressure, depth, and improved ball movement to build a 38–24 halftime lead. The momentum carried through the second half as the Hurricanes outscored the Red Hawks 40–26 over the final 20 minutes to pull away comfortably.
Freshman guard Taliya Rowe delivered a breakout performance off the bench, leading all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Rowe repeatedly attacked the lane, provided a spark in transition, and scored in bunches as Louisburg stretched the lead during the middle quarters.
Sophomore forward Nyla Powell continued her strong season with another double-double, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Powell controlled the paint defensively, altered shots, and cleaned up on the glass as the Hurricanes limited Catawba Valley's second-chance opportunities.
The Hurricanes' bench again proved to be a difference-maker. Kyleigh Goode added 14 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting, while Shalawn Yates contributed five points, six rebounds, and three steals, setting the tone defensively. Ziahmiya Adams chipped in six points, and Louisburg received contributions from Quincie Toran, Kayla Bush, and Jewel Brewington as nine different Hurricanes found the scoring column.
Louisburg finished the night shooting 50.8% from the field and an impressive 89.5% from the free-throw line, while holding Catawba Valley to just 50 points. The Hurricanes also controlled the boards with a large rebounding edge, using their depth to wear down a short-handed Red Hawks squad.
With the win, Louisburg continues to build momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.
